Second set of four lancet windows in the middle of the south wall (2)

Our second stained glass window is the one on the Sermon on the Mount, which has a panel of Saint Paul on the left and St. Barnabas on the right.

These windows were given in memory of Alice Dorothy Munger by Robert E. Steele and wife and to the glory of God by Ellen Searles Munger. This window was crafted by Heaton, Baynes and Butler of England.

Each window from left to right:

Saint Paul

In the left lancet window, St. Paul, evangelist and teacher, holds the scriptures in his left hand and his right hand rests on the hilt of the sword.
I came not to send peace, but a sword.
          Matthew 10:34

Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
          Ephesians 6:17
This panel is also labeled, "With grateful thanks to The Haas Fund, Trinity Church, Watertown".

Sermon on the Mount

Perhaps the most often-quoted scriptures are from the passage called the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:1-14 which is the basis or the window. The Beatitudes contain God's promises to us through Jesus Christ. This sermon must speak volumes to the scribes and the Pharisees. Look at their faces... they turn aside as Jesus reveals to them the "uncomfortable" words!
One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them. “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs."
          Matthew 5:1-10

Saint barnabas

In the right lancet window, Saint Barnabas, who gave all that he had to follow Christ, is depicted with a map of his travels with Saint Paul and Saint Mark. Barnabas was credited with the Christianization of Cyprus and was martyred there.

This panel is also labeled, "In memory of Margaret Goebel".

Saint Paul in the Bible

To quote all of Saint Paul in the Bible would be to rewrite most of the New Testament! After his great conversion, Paul went on to be one of the most prolific church planters and developers in history.
Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord’s followers. As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?”
“Who are you, lord?” Saul asked.
And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
The men with Saul stood speechless, for they heard the sound of someone’s voice but saw no one! Saul picked himself up off the ground, but when he opened his eyes he was blind. So his companions led him by the hand to Damascus. He remained there blind for three days and did not eat or drink.
       Acts 9:1, 3-9

Saint Barnabas

Barnabas, a Jew of Cyprus, is said to be as close to an apostle as you can get without being one of the 12! He introduced Saint Paul to Saint Peter and the other disciples - a HUGE step in the development of the Church. He also worked between Saint Paul and the Christians recently converted from Judaism as they were suspicious of their would-be persecutor.

Barnabas wrote a gospel book, but it is not used in the modern Bible. He is known for his encouraging nature - reflected in the nickname "Barnabas", and sold everything he owned to further the Kingdom of Christ on Earth.
For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.
          Acts 4:36-37
