The Kathern Window (5)
in the North Main Street Entrance
In our front vestibule is a reminder of the early church in this village. A lovely window with a cross adorned with vines, leaves and flowers and the symbol of Christ (IHS) was in the former church building on the Southwest corner of North Main and West German Streets.
Charles Kathern gave the window in memory of his wife, Almira, who was one of the four Communicants at the time the church incorporated in 1854. She was an active and devoted member of the parish as long as she lived. Charles was one of the original organizers of our church, a Vestryman for 14 years, and a Warden for 13 years thereafter. This window was restored and re-installed in our present church in loving memory of these two devout Christians in 1963. This panel is also labeled, "In memory of Nicholas & Ohla Krawecki". |
"IHS (also IHC), a monogram or symbol for the name Jesus, is a contraction of the Greek word for Jesus, which in Greek is spelled IHΣΟΥΣ in uncial (majuscule) letters and Iησους in minuscule letters and is transliterated into the Latin alphabet as Iēsus, Jēsus, or Jesus."
