The rOse Window
Facing North main Street (6)

Picture
The centerpiece, and most beautiful of all the windows in Christ Church, is the Rose Window facing on Main Street. It tells the story of Jesus from birth to death and resurrection and finally, the rose at the top represents his ascension into heaven.

The colors and artistry of the stained glass are spectacular, especially on a sunlit morning!

This window was given by the Sunday School of Christ Church, in memory of Juliet Wilkerson, wife of Robert Earl, and as a thank offering in memory of Samuel and Frances Earl and Andrew Bartow, First Warden of this church at the time.
One panel is also labeled with, "With grateful thanks, The Dewar Fund, St. James Church, Oneonta".

Each panel is displayed separately below with the Biblical reference depicted.

The Story of Jesus Christ

Picture

His birth

This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.
All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.’”
          Matthew 1:18, 22-23

His Baptism

Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. But John tried to talk him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?”
But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him.
After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
          Matthew 3:13-17

His Crucifixion

Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha). There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them. And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.
          John 19:17-20

His Burial

Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away. With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth. The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before. And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
          John 19:38-42

His Resurrection

She [Mary Magdalene] turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him. “Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?”
She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.”
“Mary!” Jesus said.
She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”).
          John 20: 14-16

His Ascension

Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven. So they worshiped him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. And they spent all of their time in the Temple, praising God.
           Luke 24:50-53

When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked through them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs.
          Mark 16:19-20
