"The Stained Glass Windows of Christ Episcopal Church"
Epilogue

In 1988-89, Christ Church was celebrating the Centennial of the present building; (the original church body was established in 1833). That event created the enthusiasm for some major renovation which included replacement windows in the Parish Hall, painting and a new carpeting.

Christ Church, Herkimer, has stood in the center of the village for over 100 years and is a beacon of light for Christ, with its lovely stone structure and bell tower.

A major portion of the renovation was the refurbishing of the lovely and priceless stained glass windows which were made by the English firm of Heaton, Baines and Butler. They were re-leaded where needed, repaired and straightened and protective Lexan was installed on the outside to protect these priceless treasures.

As one of the 'older' members of the congregation of Christ Church, I [Elinor Barnes] was invited to do some exploration of our church's history. This became a year-long odyssey, looking through old church records, writing a skit for the Centennial celebration, and writing up the story of each of the windows.

We published this story of 1 set of windows each month during the Centennial year in our bulletins and in the monthly newsletter. Fortunately, our former church secretary, Elinor Vallese, decided to keep copies of each month's write-up and thereafter, urged me to put the writings into a booklet for everyone to enjoy.

Please take this [printed] booklet with you and, if you have the time walk around the church and look at each window, read the description and history; this may give you a sense of the historicity of Christ Church in Herkimer.

                                                             Sincerely,
                                                             Elinor R. Barnes
